Study social work in Australia from Nepal: AASW-accredited BSW and MSW (Qualifying) courses, IELTS 7.0 rules, 1,000-hour placements and AASW skills assessment.

"I studied BA Sociology in Nepal. Can I become a social worker in Australia?" "I have worked with an NGO in Karnali for three years. Is a Master of Social Work right for me?" Our Kathmandu, Pokhara, Beni, Dhangadhi and Janakpur offices hear questions like these every week.
Social work in Australia leads to careers in child protection, hospitals, mental health, disability, family violence and community services, but the courses have strict rules on English, placements and accreditation. This guide explains how social work in Australia for Nepali students works in 2026, using the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), official university pages and the Department of Home Affairs. Rules change, so always confirm the official page for your intake before you apply.
In Australia, the AASW accredits social work degrees against the Australian Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards (ASWEAS). Graduates of accredited programs are eligible for AASW membership, which employers widely use as the benchmark for a qualified social worker.
Why it matters: the AASW skills assessment for international graduates requires an AASW-accredited qualification. A "community services" or "human services" degree is not the same thing.
Check the accreditation status: the AASW grants full, conditional or provisional accreditation. Provisional accreditation is used for a new course that has not yet produced graduates. For example, ECU's new Master of Social Work (Qualifying) is listed as provisionally accredited.
No national registration yet: social work is not Ahpra-registered, and in June 2026 South Australia dropped its planned state registration scheme, so AASW eligibility remains the key standard.
Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), 4 years: for students coming after +2 or without a relevant degree. Western Sydney University's Bachelor of Social Work, for example, is four years full-time, includes more than 1,000 hours of supervised field work, and lists a next start date of 1 March 2027. If you are applying after +2, see our guide to Bachelor's in Australia after +2 (NEB).
Master of Social Work (Qualifying), usually 2 years: for graduates who already hold a bachelor's degree in another field. It leads to entry-level professional practice.
The social science rule: most MSW (Qualifying) courses want at least one year of full-time study in the social sciences inside your bachelor's degree. A BA in Sociology, Psychology or Rural Development from Nepal often fits; a BBS, BSc CSIT or BE often does not, unless you add extra study first.
If you already studied social work in Nepal: your BSW or MSW is not automatically recognised; the AASW assesses overseas qualifications separately. Get your transcript checked first.
There is no single national entry rule. These examples show the pattern (confirm the current page for your intake).
ECU (Perth), Master of Social Work (Qualifying): a three-year bachelor's degree in a related field (other than social work) with at least one year of full-time social science study, or a three-year degree in any field plus one year of additional social science study. English: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with no band below 7.0, PTE Academic 65 in every skill, or TOEFL iBT 94 with set section scores. It runs for 2 years full-time, with Semester 1 and Semester 2 starts on the Joondalup campus.
Curtin (Perth), Master of Social Work (Qualifying): a relevant bachelor's degree with at least one year of full-time social science study. Entry is competitive: Curtin ranks applicants on academic record, relevant work experience, a personal statement of up to 500 words, a referee report and a CV. It is a mid-year entry course of 2 years full-time.
UWA (Perth), Master of Social Work: a bachelor's degree recognised by UWA with a selection weighted average mark of at least 65 per cent, plus a current police certificate. English: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall and no band below 7.0. It has a beginning-of-year intake only.
University of Sydney, Master of Social Work (Qualifying): the university's English standard is higher, at IELTS 7.5 overall with at least 7.0 in each band. Its 2027 application documents also ask for relevant human and community services experience and at least two referee reports for international applicants.

Social work is a communication-based profession, so the bar is high at two stages.
For admission: most accredited courses ask for IELTS 7.0 in each band, and the University of Sydney asks for 7.5 overall. Some universities accept PTE, but check the exact skill scores.
For the AASW assessment after graduation: the AASW accepts only the IELTS Academic test, taken at an official IDP or British Council centre (paper or computer). IELTS Online is not accepted. You need 7.0 in all four skills in one sitting, or 7.0 in each skill across a maximum of two sittings within six months with no score below 6.5. Results must be less than three years old when you apply.
New in 2026: from 20 May 2026 the AASW accepts the IELTS One Skill Retake. You need a computer-delivered IELTS Academic with 7.0 in three skills and at least 6.5 in the fourth, then a retake of that skill scoring 7.0 within 60 days.
Our advice: PTE may get you into some courses, but you will likely still need IELTS Academic for the AASW. Compare both in our IELTS vs PTE guide.
Field education is the heart of every accredited course. Under ASWEAS, students complete 1,000 hours of professional practice learning in no more than three placements.
The key rules: at least two placements must be distinctly different, no placement can be shorter than 250 hours, at least 500 hours must be in Australia, at least 500 hours must be in direct practice with people, and at least one placement must have an onsite social work field educator.
What it looks like: ECU describes two placements of 500 hours over 13 weeks each, one in each year, totalling 1,000 unpaid hours. Curtin says fieldwork is full-time over two semesters in two separate calendar years.
Checks before placement: expect a police clearance, a Working with Children Check and vaccinations.
Money and work: placements are generally unpaid, and the Commonwealth Prac Payment is for eligible domestic students, not international students. During a full-time placement your part-time job hours may drop sharply, so save before each block.
University pages list roles such as case manager, child and youth worker, mental health coordinator, refugee settlement officer and family violence worker, in government, hospitals and NGOs. Graduate roles reward strong English and good placement reports; we do not promise jobs, salaries or permanent residency.
The AASW assessment: the AASW is the assessing authority for Social Worker (ANZSCO 272511). For international students who studied an accredited course in Australia, it checks three criteria: identity, English under the AASW policy, and completion of the accredited qualification. The AASW says to allow four to five weeks, and you can apply only after finishing your course.
Important: a skills assessment is not a visa. Occupation lists, points and state nomination rules change often, so get individual advice before choosing social work mainly for migration. Our existing overview of social work courses in Australia gives more background.
Student visa: you will apply for a Student visa (subclass 500). Home Affairs allows up to 48 hours of work a fortnight while your course is in session, and currently lists 12-month living costs of AUD 29,710 for a single student. Mandatory placements that are a registered part of your course are generally not counted in the 48 hours, but confirm this with your university. See our part-time jobs guide.
Genuine Student requirement: explain how social work connects with your studies, NGO or community work and future plans. A sociology graduate with volunteer experience has a clear story; a sudden switch needs stronger evidence. Our GS tips for Nepali applicants can help.
Course length and the 485: a two-year MSW (Qualifying) or four-year BSW generally fits the 485 study requirement of at least 92 weeks of CRICOS study over at least 16 months, unless credit shortens it. See our 485 visa guide.
Provider changes and fees: from 2 October 2026 until 30 June 2027, students generally need 12 months in their main course before changing provider, so choose carefully. Tuition changes every year; check each course page.
12 months before: check that your bachelor's has a full year of social science units, and collect evidence of NGO, community or volunteer work.
9 to 12 months before: prepare for IELTS Academic and aim for 7.0 in every band.
6 to 9 months before: apply to two or three accredited courses, noting mid-year or start-of-year intakes, and write a strong personal statement.
After your offer: accept, receive your CoE, and prepare funds, OSHC, NOC, GS evidence and police checks.
Usually not directly for an MSW (Qualifying), because most courses require a year of social science study. Some universities, such as Curtin, offer bridging units first. A four-year BSW is another option.
Accredited courses include 1,000 hours of placement, in no more than three placements, with at least 500 hours in Australia.
Generally no. International students are not eligible for the Commonwealth Prac Payment, so budget for placement periods.
