The useful answer is criteria-first: both IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are accepted for many Subclass 500 student visa pathways and by most Australian universities—but they differ in delivery, scoring style, result speed, and how comfortable you feel under exam conditions.

IELTS Academic is an English language test designed for higher education and professional contexts. For Australian study, most course and visa pathways that accept IELTS expect the Academic version (not General Training), unless Home Affairs or your provider specifically lists another accepted form.
It assesses Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Delivery may be computer-delivered or paper-based at authorised centres. Speaking is typically a live interaction with a human examiner. Scores use a 0–9 band scale (including half bands) and are generally valid for two years—confirm date rules for your application. In Nepal, book through British Council or IDP; NPR fees change, so verify-on-publish against the live portal.
PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is a fully computer-based, centre-delivered English test also used for Australian student visas and university admissions. You complete speaking, writing, reading, and listening in a single seated session at an authorised Pearson test centre.
You complete all four skills in one computer-based sitting (typically around two hours). Speaking is recorded into a microphone with primarily automated scoring on a 10–90 scale. Pearson commonly states most scores within about two business days—confirm current turnaround when you book. Scores are generally valid for two years. Book only through official Pearson channels in Nepal and confirm the product name matches what Home Affairs and your course accept.
Test delivery: IELTS Academic can be taken on computer or on paper at a test centre, while PTE Academic is fully computer-based at a test centre.
Test length: IELTS takes about 2 hours 45 minutes, and the speaking test may be scheduled separately. PTE takes about 2 hours in one sitting.
Speaking test: In IELTS, you speak face-to-face with a human examiner. In PTE, you speak into a microphone and your answers are scored by a computer.
How it is scored: IELTS uses human examiners for speaking and writing. PTE relies mainly on automated scoring.
Score scale: IELTS results are given in bands from 0 to 9. PTE scores range from 10 to 90.
Results time: Computer-delivered IELTS results usually arrive in 1 to 5 days, and paper-based results take longer (check with your local centre). PTE results usually arrive in about 2 business days (check with Pearson).
Retakes: IELTS offers a full retake, and in some centres a One Skill Retake for eligible purposes. PTE offers a full retake under Pearson's attempt rules.
Visa acceptance: Both IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are listed as approved tests for the Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500).
Neither format is “easier” in absolute terms. Students who type quickly and prefer integrated computer tasks often lean toward PTE. Students who prefer a human speaking interview, or who train strongly for IELTS band descriptors, often prefer IELTS. Choose the format you can prepare for consistently—not the one a friend scored highest on after a different study history.
For many Subclass 500 applications, Home Affairs requires evidence of English proficiency unless you fall into an exempt class. The Migration (English Language Tests and Evidence Exemptions for Subclass 500 (Student) Visas) Instrument 2025 (commencing 7 August 2025 for applications on or after that date) lists approved tests including IELTS Academic, IELTS General Training, and PTE Academic, among others.
Verify-on-publish — indicative minimums from that instrument’s Schedule 1 (overall / average band scores):
Standard minimum: You need an IELTS Academic average band of 6.0 or a PTE Academic overall score of 47.
With at least 10 weeks of eligible ELICOS, foundation or a specified pathway course: The minimum drops to IELTS 5.5 or PTE 39.
With at least 20 weeks of ELICOS: The minimum drops to IELTS 5.0 or PTE 31.
Also confirm:
The test was taken within the two-year window specified for when evidence is provided (application day or decision day, depending on timing)
You used a secure, centre-based approved test—fully online / at-home versions are generally not accepted for Australian visa purposes
Transitional rules may apply if your test was taken before the instrument’s commencement date

Do not assume a lower score is “enough” just because a pathway package exists—your principal course offer and packaging must match the instrument’s conditions.
Meeting the visa English minimum does not automatically meet university entry. Many Australian universities publish higher requirements for the course itself. Common published patterns (examples only—always check your course page):
Many undergraduate / postgraduate coursework programs target around IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall with minimum band floors (often 5.5 or 6.0)
Equivalent PTE Academic overall targets commonly sit in the 50–65+ range depending on the institution’s concordance table
Nursing, teaching, health, and some law programs frequently require higher overall and sub-skill scores (sometimes IELTS 7.0+ or matching PTE minima)

1. Book only through official channels — British Council / IDP for IELTS; Pearson for PTE. Avoid third-party “guaranteed score” agents.
2. Match the test name exactly — IELTS Academic vs General Training; PTE Academic vs other Pearson products. Wrong product = wasted fee and delayed visa timeline.
3. Check centre cities early — Kathmandu and Pokhara usually have more frequent seats; regional centres may have fewer dates. Peak intake seasons fill quickly.

Under the same 2025 instrument, the standard indicative minimum for IELTS Academic is an average band score of 6.0, with lower averages (5.5 / 5.0) only where ELICOS / foundation / eligible pathway packaging rules apply. Your university may require higher—confirm Schedule scores and CoE packaging.
Home Affairs lists IELTS General Training among approved Subclass 500 tests in the 2025 instrument. However, most university degree offers still ask for IELTS Academic.
