Masters in Australia After a Bachelor's from Nepal: Entry Requirements & 3-Year Degree Eligibility (2026 Guide)

Can you do a Masters in Australia with a 3-year bachelor's from Nepal? See entry requirements, course length, English scores and student visa tips for 2026.

Masters in Australia After a Bachelor's from Nepal: Entry Requirements & 3-Year Degree Eligibility (2026 Guide)

"My Bachelor's from Nepal was only three years. Can I still do a Master's in Australia?" We hear it often at our Kathmandu, Pokhara, Beni, Dhangadhi and Janakpur offices. Many Australian universities do accept Nepali graduates into Master's programs, but the rules are set by each university and course, not by one national list.

This guide explains how a Masters in Australia from Nepal works in 2026: whether a three-year degree is accepted, how your background changes course length, which English scores you need, and how your choice affects your student visa.

Entry rules and visa settings change, so always check the official course page and the Home Affairs website before you apply.

How a Masters fits into the Australian system

Australia ranks qualifications using the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). A Bachelor degree sits at AQF Level 7, an Honours degree or Graduate Diploma at Level 8, and a Master's degree at Level 9.

According to Study Australia, a Master's degree usually takes one to two years and is completed after a Bachelor degree, a Bachelor (Honours) degree or a Graduate Diploma. For some courses, significant relevant work experience may also be considered. There are three main types:

  • Masters by Coursework: classes and assessments, sometimes with a project or minor thesis.

  • Masters by Research: mostly an independent thesis of roughly 20,000 to 40,000 words.

  • Masters (Extended): a longer professional degree focused on professional practice.

Most Nepali students choose a Masters by Coursework, so that is the focus here.

Is a 3-year bachelor's degree from Nepal accepted?

Often, yes, but not automatically and not for every course. Australian Bachelor degrees are commonly three years long, so a three-year degree is not a problem in itself. What universities check is whether your degree is comparable to an Australian Bachelor degree (AQF Level 7), whether it came from a recognised institution, and whether your grades meet the course minimum.

Here is how some universities describe it on their own pages:

  • Deakin University: for a Masters by coursework, you must have completed "at least a three-year undergraduate degree or an equivalent qualification" from an approved institution.

  • Monash University: a Master by coursework takes two semesters with a relevant four-year degree and three semesters with a relevant three-year bachelor degree.

  • Macquarie University: postgraduate entry generally needs a bachelor considered equivalent to an Australian Bachelor degree (AQF Level 7), and some courses also ask for related study, work experience or a higher-level qualification.

  • Charles Darwin University: your bachelor must be deemed equivalent to an Australian Bachelor degree by the university's own qualification assessment references.

Some scholarships treat three-year and four-year degrees differently. Australia Awards Nepal, for example, accepts a three-year bachelor's only when followed by at least a one-year master's (plus work experience). That is a scholarship rule, not a general admission rule, but it shows why you should read every requirement line by line.

Why your background changes the length of your Masters

Many students do not realise that the same Master's can be one year, 1.5 years or two years long depending on what you studied before. The AQF describes the typical volume of learning for a Masters by Coursework as one to two years:

  • Same or related field after a Bachelor degree (Level 7): typically 1.5 years.

  • Same or related field after an Honours degree or Graduate Diploma (Level 8): typically one year.

  • Different field after a Bachelor degree: typically two years.

  • Different field after a Level 8 qualification: typically 1.5 years.

Universities apply this in their own way. Macquarie's curriculum policy, for instance, links its one-year Master's mainly to a related honours degree or Graduate Diploma and its 1.5-year Master's to a related bachelor's. A BBS graduate choosing a Master of Professional Accounting, or a BSc CSIT graduate choosing a Master of IT, may receive a shorter pathway or credit than someone switching fields.

A longer course means more tuition, living costs and funds to show for your visa, so confirm your course length and any credit in writing before accepting an offer.

Grades, GPA and work experience

There is no single national GPA cut-off for a Master's in Australia. Each university converts your Nepali marks or CGPA into its own scale and sets a minimum for each course, and competitive courses ask for more.

Bachelor's performance: UTS, for example, says your academic performance at bachelor's level is considered for most postgraduate courses.

Work experience: Some programmes, such as many MBAs and professional Master's degrees, ask for relevant work experience, a CV, a portfolio or a personal statement. Edith Cowan University in Perth says applicants may also qualify with at least five years of professional experience relevant to the course.

Field match: Some Master's degrees need a related bachelor's, while many IT or business conversion Master's accept graduates from any field.

If your grades fall below the cut-off, do not give up straight away. A Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma (often six months to one year) can be a stepping stone, and some universities offer a Masters Qualifying Program. Western Sydney University's handbook, for example, lists a Masters Qualifying Program in Business that accepts a Nepali three-year Bachelor from a recognised (Section 1) institution at pass or second division, leading to entry to its business Master's on completion. Check the current handbook, as entry rules are updated each year.

English test scores: university vs visa

You have to meet two separate English requirements, and the university's is usually the higher one.

Visa minimum: Home Affairs lists a minimum of IELTS 6.0, PTE Academic 47 or TOEFL iBT 67 for a Student visa when your principal course is studied on its own. Lower scores are allowed only when you package at least 10 or 20 weeks of English (ELICOS) before your main course. Tests taken entirely online at home, such as IELTS Online, are not accepted.

University minimum: Many Master's programs ask for around IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 (Torrens University and ECU list this, for example), and some health, teaching and law courses ask for more.

Making your Masters choice work for your student visa

An offer letter is only the first step. Your Student visa (subclass 500) will be assessed under the Genuine Student (GS) requirement, and the course you pick is a big part of that story.

Course value: Home Affairs considers whether the course is consistent with your current level of education and relevant to your past or planned work. A Master's after a related Bachelor's is usually easy to explain.

Changing fields: Ministerial Direction No. 106 says decision makers should allow for reasonable changes to career or study pathways, but an unrelated field can attract closer scrutiny. Explain the reason and back it with evidence such as work, training or short courses. Our Genuine Student tips for Nepali applicants covers this in detail.

Time since graduation: A long gap is not an automatic refusal, but you must explain it with evidence. See is a study gap accepted in Australia.

Funds: You must show you can pay tuition, travel and living costs for your course. The current Home Affairs living-cost figure is AUD 29,710 per year for the main applicant (verify before applying). Our proof of funds guide explains what Nepali sponsors usually provide.

Nepal paperwork: You will also need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Nepal's Ministry of Education before sending money for fees. See our NOC Nepal guide.

Choose carefully the first time: From 2 October 2026 to 30 June 2027, most students must complete 12 months of their main course before another provider can enrol them, unless an exception applies. Picking the right university and course before you fly saves stress later.

After your Masters: post-study work

A Master's degree can open the door to the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485). Under the Post-Higher Education Work stream, Masters by Coursework graduates are currently eligible for up to two years, and Masters by Research graduates up to three years, subject to age and other criteria. Read our 485 visa guide for Nepali students for the full rules.

A simple checklist before you apply

  • Collect transcripts, degree certificate, character certificate and any work experience letters.

  • Note whether your degree is three or four years, and your final percentage or CGPA.

  • Check each shortlisted course page for entry rules, prerequisites and English scores.

  • Ask the university how long your Master's will be and whether you get credit.

  • Book IELTS or PTE early and aim for the university score.

  • Plan funds, NOC and GS evidence alongside your application.
