Planning a PhD in Australia from Nepal? See entry rules, how to find a supervisor, RTP scholarships, English scores and the 2026 PhD family visa exemption.

"I have finished my Master's in Nepal and want to do research. Can I do a PhD in Australia, and can my family come with me?" We hear this often at our Kathmandu, Pokhara, Beni, Dhangadhi and Janakpur offices, especially from lecturers and researchers.
The short answer: yes, if you can show strong research preparation, find a supervisor and plan your funding early. And since the Student visa family rules changed on 2 October 2026, the difference between a PhD and a Master's by Research matters more than ever.
This guide explains how a PhD in Australia from Nepal works in 2026: eligibility, supervisors, RTP scholarships, English scores and the current rules on bringing your partner and children. Rules and rates change, so always check the university page and the Home Affairs website.
According to Study Australia, a doctoral degree is the highest award offered by Australian universities and usually takes three to four years. It normally follows a Bachelor Degree (Honours) with a research component, or a Master's Degree.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD): original, in-depth research under supervision, ending in a major thesis.
Professional doctorate: a doctoral qualification that includes coursework and is usually linked to a profession.
Master's by Research: a shorter research degree, often one to two years, built around a thesis of roughly 20,000 to 40,000 words. Many students use it as a stepping stone to a PhD.
There is no single national entry rule. Each university decides what counts as "adequate research preparation", and Nepali qualifications are assessed for equivalence. Here is how three universities describe it on their own pages:
University of Western Australia (Perth): research preparation can be shown by an honours degree, or a one-year postgraduate degree, with a research component of at least 25% of the year's weighting. For a doctorate it asks for results equivalent to a UWA distinction (70) overall and for the research component. Publications or relevant work experience can also count.
Curtin University (Perth): its HDR procedures effective 1 January 2026 accept, for example, an Honours degree at distinction average, a research Master's in a relevant field, or a coursework Master's at distinction average that included a substantial component of original research.
Macquarie University (Sydney): asks for a Master of Research with at least 75% in the second year, a Master of Philosophy, or a two-year Master's with a major research component at distinction level (75% or more). Applicants who do not meet this may be asked to complete the Master of Research first as a training pathway.
What this means for Nepali applicants: a Master's with a graded thesis is usually your strongest evidence. Keep your thesis, its grade, your university's grading scale and any articles ready.
Your current research experience: if you have no thesis or published research yet, a Master's by Research (or Macquarie's MRes) can build the record a PhD panel looks for.
Bringing your family: this is now a key difference. Home Affairs lists PhD students as an exemption category for including family members in a Student visa application. The page states clearly that this exemption does not apply to a Master's by Research.
Scholarships: Research Training Program (RTP) scholarships can support both research doctorates and research master's degrees.
Post-study work: the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) currently allows up to three years for both Masters (research) and Doctoral graduates in the Post-Higher Education Work stream.
For most PhDs, your supervisor matters as much as your grades. Curtin, for example, asks applicants to secure written advice from a Curtin academic, through an Expression of Interest form, that they are able and willing to supervise the project before applying. Macquarie's application steps also include finding a supervisor and developing a research proposal with them.
Search and email: use university staff profiles to find academics who publish in your field, then send a short email with your CV, transcripts and a few lines on your research question.
Develop the proposal together: a good proposal states the research question, your methods and why the work matters. UWA, for instance, requires a full-time PhD student to submit an approved research proposal within six months of first enrolment.
Macquarie's research application checklist is a good example of what universities ask for:
Official transcripts, your university's grading scale and degree certificates
English test score report
A detailed CV, including any publications
Your thesis abstract, copy and grade, if your degree included one
A research proposal, referee details and a passport copy
Visa: Home Affairs lists students "enrolled in a registered post-graduate research course" among those who do not need to provide English test evidence with their Student visa application.
University: universities still set their own requirement, and research degrees often ask for more than coursework. Curtin's PhD lists IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each band, and Macquarie lists IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each band for its Master of Research in Science and Engineering. Some faculties ask for higher scores.

The Australian Government's Research Training Program (RTP) is the main source of PhD funding, but you do not apply to the government. According to the Department of Education, universities run their own application, selection and deadlines, and they may spend up to 10% of their RTP funding on international students, so competition is strong.
What it can cover: RTP support can include a tuition fee offset, a living stipend and allowances. The Department of Education lists a full-time base stipend of AUD 35,550 and a maximum of AUD 55,537 for 2027, and each university chooses a rate within that range. The University of Sydney, for example, lists AUD 44,293 a year at the 2027 rate.
Timing: many main rounds for 2027 have already closed. The University of Sydney lists a round closing on 18 December 2026 for research periods 3 and 4 of 2027. Start planning at least a year ahead of your intended start.

You will apply for a Student visa (subclass 500), usually from Nepal. Key points from the Home Affairs page, checked on 19 October 2026:
Including family: from 2 October 2026, most Student visa applicants can no longer include partners and children. PhD students are an exemption, but family members must apply at the same time as you. Family members cannot apply later as subsequent entrants in any circumstance, so decide before you lodge.
Funds: Home Affairs currently lists 12-month living costs of AUD 29,710 for the student, AUD 10,394 for a partner and AUD 4,449 for each child, plus at least AUD 13,502 a year for each school-age child. It says PhD students do not need to show schooling costs if their child is enrolled in a government school where the fees have been waived. Our proof of funds guide explains acceptable evidence.
Visa charge: Home Affairs lists family members of students enrolled in a postgraduate research course among applicants who do not need to pay a visa application charge. Check the current Visa Pricing Estimator before you lodge.
Health cover: you and every family member need OSHC.
Work: Home Affairs says students studying a master's by research or doctoral degree, and their families, have no work limit, unlike the usual 48 hours a fortnight during study periods.
Genuine Student: your research plan should link clearly to your career in Nepal or elsewhere. Our Genuine Student tips for Nepali applicants explains what to include.
You will also need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Nepal's Ministry of Education before sending money abroad for fees.
Under the Post-Higher Education Work stream of the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), Doctoral graduates can currently stay for up to three years. The usual age limit is 35, but Home Affairs allows applicants under 50 if they are using a Masters by research or a PhD. Read our 485 visa guide for Nepali students. 12 to 18 months before: choose your field, check entry rules at shortlisted universities and gather your transcripts, thesis and grading scale.
12 months before: contact potential supervisors and start your research proposal.
9 to 12 months before: sit IELTS or PTE, and note the RTP and university scholarship deadlines.
6 to 9 months before: apply for admission and scholarships.
After your offer: accept, receive your CoE, prepare funds, OSHC, NOC and GS evidence, and decide whether your family will apply with you.
Yes, if it shows strong grades and research training, such as a thesis. Each university assesses equivalence itself.
Usually yes for the university, even though postgraduate research students are exempt from giving English evidence for the visa.
Under the current Home Affairs rules, PhD students are an exemption category and can include family when they lodge. A Master's by Research does not qualify, and family cannot join later as subsequent entrants.
