Engineering in Australia for Nepali Students: Accredited Courses, Entry Rules & Skills Assessment (2026 Guide)

"I want to study civil engineering in Australia. Which course will actually be recognised when I start working?" It is one of the most common questions at our Kathmandu, Pokhara, Beni, Dhangadhi and Janakpur offices, from +2 science students and BE graduates alike.

The answer depends less on the university's name and more on one detail many students miss: whether your exact program is accredited by Engineers Australia. This guide explains how engineering in Australia for Nepali students works in 2026: choosing an accredited course, entry rules after +2 or a Bachelor's, how Engineers Australia skills assessment works, and what to check if you plan to return to Nepal. Rules and fees change, so always confirm on the official pages before you apply.

Why Engineers Australia accreditation matters

Engineers Australia is the body that accredits engineering programs in Australia. It publishes a list of accredited programs, updated regularly, that shows each program's first year of accreditation and whether its status is Full (F) or Provisional (P).

Full accreditation: according to Engineers Australia, a student admitted to a fully accredited program can expect their degree to be recognised by Engineers Australia, and by signatories to the Washington, Sydney and Dublin Accords where applicable.

Provisional accreditation: this is given when a program has not yet produced enough graduates. Engineers Australia states that provisionally accredited programs are not recognised under the international accords. Its skills assessment page also says graduates with a provisionally accredited Australian qualification should apply through the longer Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) pathway.

The same university can have both: in the September 2026 list, for example, Curtin University's Bentley campus shows the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Civil and Construction Engineering as Full (since 2015), while its newer Energy Engineering and Software Systems Engineering majors are listed as Provisional (2025).

What to do: before you accept an offer, find your program in the latest Engineers Australia accredited programs list and note its status and the level it is accredited at (professional engineer, engineering technologist or engineering associate).

Bachelor of Engineering after +2 (NEB)

A Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Australia usually takes four years full-time. Entry is set by each university, and science and maths subjects matter as much as your overall GPA.

Example, Curtin University (Perth): its Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) lists a guaranteed ATAR of 80 or an equivalent qualification, with essential subjects of mathematics including calculus and at least one of Physics, Chemistry or Engineering Studies. Curtin assesses Nepali results for equivalence, so ask before you apply how your NEB grades and maths subjects map to its requirement.

If you do not meet direct entry: some universities offer a foundation year or a pathway diploma first. Deakin College, for example, lists a Year 12 mathematics prerequisite for its Diploma of Engineering. Our guide to a Bachelor's in Australia after +2 (NEB) explains GPA rules and pathways in detail.

Master of Professional Engineering after a Bachelor's

If you already have a Bachelor's degree, the main option is a professional Master's that leads to accredited professional engineer status.

Example, University of Western Australia (Perth): UWA's Master of Professional Engineering takes two to three years full-time depending on prior study. Its 2026 Handbook asks for a recognised Bachelor's with the equivalent of a UWA weighted average mark of at least 65%, plus prior studies in engineering, physics or mathematics that UWA assesses as adequate. Students without the required maths and physics background may need extra preparatory units. The course includes at least 450 hours of practical experience and a 12-week professional practicum, and lists IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0.

Example, Western Sydney University (Sydney): its handbook for the Master of Engineering asks for a recognised four-year undergraduate engineering degree in a related specialisation, so it suits BE graduates rather than career changers.

Which route fits you?

+2 science student with strong maths: a four-year accredited Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is the most direct route, and gives you an Australian qualification for skills assessment later.

Bachelor's in science or a related field: a Master of Professional Engineering may be possible, but check the maths and physics prerequisites and the course length, which can be longer if you need preparatory units.

BE graduate from Nepal: you can choose a professional Master's to gain an Australian accredited qualification, or a specialised Master of Engineering to deepen your field. Not every advanced Master's is accredited, so ask.

Working engineer who mainly wants recognition: studying is not the only way. Engineers Australia also assesses overseas qualifications and experience directly through the CDR pathway.

How Engineers Australia skills assessment works

Engineers Australia is authorised by the Department of Home Affairs to assess engineering qualifications, skills and experience for migration purposes. It recognises four occupational categories: professional engineer, engineering technologist, engineering associate and engineering manager. It lists AQF Level 6 (Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree) as the minimum qualification it can assess.

Australian qualification pathway: for graduates of an Engineers Australia accredited program who started during or after its accreditation year. The 2026-27 fee page lists AUD 315 excluding GST for this assessment.

Accord pathways: for accredited qualifications from a Washington, Sydney or Dublin Accord signatory. When we checked the International Engineering Alliance website in October 2026, Nepal was not listed as a full or provisional Washington Accord signatory, so these pathways generally do not apply to Nepali degrees today. Engineers Australia lists AUD 505 excluding GST for an Accord assessment.

CDR pathway: for non-accredited qualifications, including most overseas degrees from non-signatory countries. You write three career episodes and a summary statement showing all 16 elements of competency, and add a CPD statement and documents. The listed fee is AUD 940 excluding GST.

A serious warning: Engineers Australia states that career episodes or a summary statement written by a third person count as plagiarism. Penalties include rejection and a 12, 24 or 36-month ban on applying again, and your details may be reported to Home Affairs. Write your own CDR.

English for skills assessment: for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, Engineers Australia lists IELTS 6 in each band, or PTE Academic Listening 47, Reading 48, Writing 51 and Speaking 54. Graduates who complete at least 92 weeks of study at AQF Level 6 or above at a CRICOS-registered Australian institution are usually exempt. Planning your test? Read our IELTS vs PTE guide.

Student visa, work rights and after graduation

Student visa basics: you will apply for a Student visa (subclass 500). Home Affairs allows work of up to 48 hours a fortnight while your course is in session, and currently lists 12-month living costs of AUD 29,710 for a single student. Your course choice should make sense for your background and goals under the Genuine Student requirement. Our GS tips for Nepali applicants explains how to show this.

Professional Year: a Professional Year in Engineering is a structured program done in Australia after graduation. The Home Affairs points table for the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) awards 5 points for completing a Professional Year in Accounting, ICT/Computing or Engineering in your nominated or a closely related occupation. Is it worth it? Read our Professional Year Program guide.

Post-study work: under the Post-Higher Education Work stream of the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), Bachelor and Master's (coursework) graduates can currently stay for up to two years, with an age limit of 35 for most applicants. See our 485 visa guide. A skills assessment and skilled visa are separate steps, and no course guarantees permanent residency.

Planning to work in Nepal later? Check NEC rules early

Under the Nepal Engineering Council Act, 2055, no one may practise the engineering profession in Nepal without registering with the Nepal Engineering Council (NEC). The NEC registration portal asks applicants who studied abroad for an equivalence certificate issued by an authorised Nepal Government agency.

Tribhuvan University's Institute of Engineering publishes its requirements for granting equivalence of a Bachelor of Engineering. They include +2 or diploma study with Physics, Chemistry and two full credit courses (200 marks) in Mathematics, a course duration of eight semesters, no lateral entry into the second year, and evidence of stay in the country of study. If returning home is part of your career plan, check these rules before choosing a shorter or bridging route.

A simple planning timeline

  • 12 to 18 months before: choose your field and shortlist programs that are fully accredited at the level you need.

  • 9 to 12 months before: check maths and science prerequisites, gather transcripts and sit IELTS or PTE.

  • 6 to 9 months before: apply, and compare offers for course length, practicum and accreditation status.

  • After your offer: accept, receive your CoE, and prepare funds, OSHC, NOC and Genuine Student evidence for your visa.

Frequently asked questions

Is a BE from Nepal accepted for skills assessment in Australia?

Engineers Australia can assess it, usually through the CDR pathway, because Nepal is not currently listed as a Washington Accord signatory. Check the International Engineering Alliance website for any change.

Is every engineering degree in Australia accredited?

No. Check the Engineers Australia accredited programs list for your exact program, major and campus, and look for Full status.

Can I study a Master of Professional Engineering without an engineering Bachelor's?

Sometimes. UWA, for example, accepts a recognised Bachelor's with enough engineering, physics or mathematics, but extra preparatory units may be needed.
