Study Abroad
Planning a data science or business analytics master's in Australia from Nepal? Compare entry rules, maths prerequisites, IELTS, course length, 485 and ACS.

"I studied BBA in Nepal. Can I do data science in Australia?" "I have a BSc CSIT. Should I choose data science or business analytics?" Students ask us these questions in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Beni, Dhangadhi and Janakpur almost every day.
Data is now used in banking, retail, health, mining, government and almost every other industry, so these courses attract many students. But the entry rules are stricter than many people expect, especially around maths. This guide explains how data science in Australia for Nepali students works in 2026, using official university pages, the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and the Department of Home Affairs. Rules change every year, so always check the official course page for your intake before applying.
The names sound similar, but the courses lean in different directions. Read the course structure, not just the title.
Data science: more technical and mathematical. Expect programming (often Python and R), statistics, machine learning, databases and big data tools. UNSW, for example, builds its Master of Data Science and Decisions on three areas: mathematics and statistics, computer science and economics.
Business analytics: more focused on using data to make business decisions. Macquarie describes its Master of Business Analytics as covering programming, database management, applied statistics and machine learning for large datasets, applied to business problems.
Predictive analytics and hybrid courses: some universities use other names. Curtin in Perth offers a Master of Predictive Analytics with majors including Data Science and Finance and Investment Analytics.
Simple rule: if you enjoy coding and maths, data science may suit you. If you come from business, finance or economics and want to stay close to management decisions, business analytics may be the better fit. If you mainly want software development or networking, our IT courses guide may help more.
Many Nepali applicants focus only on GPA and IELTS. For data science, maths background can decide your offer.
UWA (Perth): asks for ATAR Mathematics Methods or an equivalent recognised by UWA. For Nepali students, this usually means showing suitable maths in your +2 or bachelor's studies.
UNSW (Sydney): lists assumed knowledge of at least one university course in several variable calculus and one in linear algebra. That is a high bar for many BBA or BA graduates.
Business analytics is often more flexible: Macquarie accepts any AQF level 7 bachelor's degree for its two-year version, and UTS accepts a degree in any discipline with a GPA of at least 4 out of 7.
Our advice: collect your transcripts early and check which units cover statistics, calculus, linear algebra or programming. This helps us match you with the right course.
There is no national entry rule. Here is how five universities in Perth and Sydney describe their courses (confirm the current page for your intake).
UWA (Perth), Master of Data Science: a bachelor's degree recognised by UWA, the equivalent of a UWA weighted average mark of at least 65 per cent, and Mathematics Methods or equivalent. Alternatively, completion of the UWA College Pre-Masters Program with a WAM of at least 50. English: IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. The handbook lists a standard duration of 1.5 years with admission credit, and up to 2 years without it, with February and July intakes. UWA states the course is accredited by ACS.
Curtin (Perth), Master of Predictive Analytics: a recognised bachelor's degree. Curtin lists IELTS Academic 6.0 overall and 6.0 in each band. It is 2 years full-time on campus, with Semester 1 and Semester 2 intakes. For Semester 1, 2027, Curtin lists an application closing date of 28 January 2027.
UNSW (Sydney), Master of Data Science and Decisions: a recognised bachelor's degree with a substantial quantitative component in a cognate discipline (such as business, commerce, engineering, mathematics, science or technology) and an overall average of 70 or higher. It is 2 years (96 units of credit) and includes a research project. Check UNSW's English requirement for this program code (8959).
UTS (Sydney), Master of Data Science and Innovation: a bachelor's degree in any discipline with a GPA of 4 out of 7, or any degree plus two years of relevant professional work, or a degree in a relevant discipline. English: IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in writing, or PTE 58 with 50 in writing. It is 2 years full-time, and some applicants may receive credit to finish in 1.5 years.
Macquarie (Sydney), Master of Business Analytics: 2 years with an AQF level 7 bachelor's degree, or 1.5 years with a bachelor's in a related field (such as computer science, economics, finance, mathematics or statistics) or a bachelor's plus two years of relevant experience. English: IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each band.
Worried that your three-year Nepali degree may not be accepted? Read our guide to Masters in Australia after a Bachelor's from Nepal. For English test choice, see IELTS vs PTE for Australian student visas.
A shorter course saves time and money, but it can affect your post-study work plans.
The 485 study requirement: for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), you generally need CRICOS-registered study totalling at least two academic years (92 weeks), completed over at least 16 calendar months in Australia. Only the standard CRICOS duration counts.
1.5-year versions: UWA, UTS and Macquarie all describe ways to finish in 1.5 years with credit or a related background. A 1.5-year course on its own may not meet the 485 study requirement.
Think before accepting credit: credit for your Nepali degree can reduce the study counted for the 485. Our 485 visa guide explains the rule and the age limit in detail.
University pages list roles such as data analyst, data scientist, business analyst, intelligence analyst and consultant. Graduates work in banking, retail, consulting, government, health and resources.
Be realistic: graduate data roles in Australia are competitive. Employers look for a strong portfolio (GitHub projects, Kaggle-style work, an industry project), communication skills and local experience. We do not promise jobs, salaries or permanent residency.
Who assesses data occupations? ACS is the assessing authority for three data science occupations: Data Analyst (ANZSCO 224114), Data Scientist (ANZSCO 224115) and Information and Organisation Professionals NEC (Data Scientist) (ANZSCO 224999).
How much experience? under the ACS General Skills pathway, a bachelor's degree or higher with a major in data science needs 2 years of relevant work in the last 10 years (or 4 years at any time). A major in ICT, computer science, maths, statistics or engineering needs 4 years. Work must be professional and at least 20 hours per week. Graduates of Australian degrees have a separate Post Australian Study pathway, so check ACS guidelines for your situation.
Important: ACS says course accreditation does not guarantee a suitable assessment, and a skills assessment is not a visa. Occupation lists, points and state nomination rules change often, so get individual advice before choosing a course for migration reasons.
Student visa: you will apply for a Student visa (subclass 500). Home Affairs allows up to 48 hours of work a fortnight while your course is in session, and currently lists 12-month living costs of AUD 29,710 for a single student. See our part-time jobs guide for common student jobs.
Genuine Student requirement: explain clearly why data science or business analytics connects with your degree, work and future plans. A BBA graduate moving into business analytics is easy to explain; a sudden switch needs a stronger story. Our GS tips for Nepali applicants can help.
Provider changes: from 2 October 2026 until 30 June 2027, students generally need to complete 12 months of their main course before changing provider, so choose carefully from Nepal.
Fees: tuition differs between universities and changes every year. Check the current international fee on each course page.
12 months before: decide between data science and business analytics, and check your maths and programming units.
9 to 12 months before: take IELTS or PTE, and learn basic Python or SQL to test your interest.
6 to 9 months before: apply to two or three universities and ask how any credit affects course length.
After your offer: accept, receive your CoE, prepare funds, OSHC, NOC and GS evidence, and book your visa medical and biometrics.
Often yes for business analytics, for example at Macquarie or UTS. Technical data science courses such as UNSW's may require calculus and linear algebra, so check your transcript first.
Not always for entry, but you will learn programming quickly. Basic Python or SQL before you leave will make your first semester easier.
On its own it may not be. The 485 generally needs at least 92 weeks of CRICOS study over at least 16 months in Australia.
No. They overlap, but they are different courses. See our posts on AI and machine learning and studying cybersecurity in Australia.
