Working While Studying

Working While Studying: How Many Hours Can You Work in Australia?

One of the most attractive aspects of studying in Australia is the ability to work part-time. The Australian minimum wage is among the highest in the world, allowing international students to comfortably manage their living expenses while gaining valuable industry experience. However, strict rules govern your work rights. Here is exactly what you need to know to stay compliant with your student visa.

Working While Studying: How Many Hours Can You Work in Australia?

The 48-Hour Fortnight Rule

Under standard student visa conditions, you are permitted to work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session.

  • A "fortnight" is a 14-day period starting on a Monday and ending on the second following Sunday.

  • You can divide these hours however you like (e.g., 20 hours one week and 28 hours the next), as long as you do not exceed 48 hours in any 14-day window.

Unlimited Work Rights During Breaks

When your university is officially on a scheduled semester break or summer holiday, the 48-hour restriction is lifted. You are allowed to work unlimited hours during these recognized holiday periods.

Exceptions to the Rule

Are you pursuing a Master’s by Research or a PhD? Good news! Students enrolled in these specific postgraduate research sectors have unlimited work rights year-round once their course has commenced.

What Do You Need Before You Start Working?

Before you accept your first shift, you must apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Without a TFN, your employer will be forced to tax your income at the absolute highest emergency rate. You should also open an Australian bank account so your employer can pay you directly.
