What to Pack for Australia

What to Pack for Australia: The Ultimate Student Checklist

You have your university offer, your student visa is approved, and your flights are booked. The final step before your Australian adventure begins is packing your bags. Overpacking is a common mistake for international students. To save you from paying hefty excess baggage fees, here is the ultimate packing checklist tailored for students heading down under.

What to Pack for Australia: The Ultimate Student Checklist

1. Essential Documents (Carry-On)

Never put these in your checked luggage. Keep them in a secure, accessible folder in your carry-on backpack:

  • Valid Passport and a printed copy of your Student Visa grant letter.

  • Original academic transcripts and IELTS/PTE scorecards.

  • Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) and university offer letter.

  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) policy details.

  • Accommodation details and airport pickup confirmation.

2. Clothing Basics

Australia’s climate is diverse, but you generally do not need extreme winter gear unless you are heading to a cooler city like Hobart.

  • Everyday Wear: T-shirts, jeans, shorts, and comfortable walking shoes. The university dress code is highly casual.

  • Warm Layers: A good quality waterproof jacket, a couple of hoodies, and sweaters for the winter months.

  • Formal Attire: Bring one formal outfit (a suit or a formal dress) for presentations, job interviews, or university events.

3. Electronics and Adaptors

  • Your laptop and charger.

  • Universal Travel Adaptor: Australia uses Type I plugs (three flat pins in a triangular pattern). Bring at least two universal adaptors so you can charge your devices immediately.

4. What NOT to Bring (Strict Biosecurity)

Australia has some of the strictest biosecurity laws in the world to protect its unique ecosystem. Do not pack:

  • Fresh fruits, vegetables, or home-cooked meals.

  • Unpackaged seeds, nuts, or dairy products.

  • Wood, plant materials, or animal products.

  • Note: If you bring any packaged spices or traditional snacks from home, you MUST declare them on your Incoming Passenger Card.
