Step 1: University Acceptance and the Form I-20

Before you can apply for a visa, you must apply to and be accepted by a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-approved university in the US. Once accepted, the university will issue you a Form I-20. This document is the cornerstone of your visa application, detailing your program length, costs, and funding sources.

Step 2: Pay the SEVIS Fee

With your I-20 in hand, you must pay the I-901 SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) fee. This fee funds the system that tracks international students in the US. Keep the receipt, as you will need it for your visa interview.

Step 3: Complete the DS-160 Application

The DS-160 is the official online nonimmigrant visa application. You will need to fill this out carefully, detailing your personal background, educational history, and travel plans. After submission, print the confirmation page with the barcode.

Step 4: Schedule and Prepare for the Interview

You will need to schedule a visa interview at the US Embassy in Kathmandu. The interview is the most critical part of the process. The consular officer will evaluate three main things:

• Academic Intent: Are you a genuine student with a clear study plan?

• Financial Capacity: Can you or your sponsor comfortably cover your tuition and living expenses? (You will need bank statements and sponsorship letters).

• Non-Immigrant Intent: Can you demonstrate strong ties to Nepal, proving you intend to return after graduation?
