Ultimate Guide to Australian Visas
Australia’s immigration system is one of the most structured and rewarding in the world, offering incredible opportunities for education, career growth, and a world-class lifestyle. However, with over 100 different visa subclasses available, figuring out which one is right for you can feel like navigating a maze. At Everest Global Education, we process thousands of successful applications every year. To help you understand your options, we have broken down the most common Australian visa categories into this simple, ultimate guide.

For most international applicants, the journey begins with education. Australia boasts some of the world's highest-ranking universities, and the student visa framework is built to support your academic and professional transition.
Student Visa (Subclass 500): This is the golden ticket for international students. It allows you to live, study, and work (up to 48 hours per fortnight) in Australia. To secure this visa, you must be enrolled in a registered course, meet the English language requirements (usually PTE 50 or IELTS 6.0), show adequate financial capacity, and pass the strict "Genuine Student" (GS) assessment.
Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485): What happens after you graduate? The 485 visa allows you to stay in Australia to live and work full-time. Depending on your level of study (Bachelor, Master's, or PhD), you can stay for between two and three years. This visa is the critical bridge you need to gain local work experience before applying for Permanent Residency.
If your ultimate goal is Australian Permanent Residency (PR), the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program is the most common route. This is a points-based system that invites individuals based on their age, English proficiency, education, and work experience.
Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189): The most highly sought-after PR visa. It allows you to live and work anywhere in Australia. You do not need a sponsor, but because it is completely independent, competition is fierce. You generally need extremely high points and an occupation in a critical sector (like Healthcare or Education).
Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190): If your points are slightly lower, you can seek a nomination from an Australian state or territory government. If nominated, you gain an extra 5 PR points. The catch? You must commit to living in that specific state for at least two years.
Skilled Work Regional Visa (Subclass 491): Australia wants to grow its regional economies. The 491 visa offers a massive 15-point boost to your application if you are nominated by a regional state. Remember: Major cities like Perth, Adelaide, and Hobart are classified as regional!
If navigating the competitive points system sounds exhausting, finding an employer to sponsor you is a fantastic alternative.
Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482): The primary temporary work visa. If an Australian employer cannot find a local worker for a skilled role, they can sponsor you.
Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186): This is the direct route to PR through employment. After working for your sponsoring employer on a 482 visa for just two years, they can nominate you for permanent residency.
If you have fallen in love with an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or if you want to bring your family over once you secure PR, the family visa stream is for you.
Partner Visas (Subclass 820/801 Onshore OR 309/100 Offshore): Whether you are married or in a de facto relationship, these visas allow you to join your partner in Australia. The process has two stages: you are first granted a provisional visa, and after two years (with ongoing proof of a genuine relationship), you are granted permanent residency.
Parent Visas: Once you are settled, you can sponsor your parents. You can choose between temporary long-stay visas (Subclass 870) or permanent contributory visas (Subclass 143), depending on your financial capacity and how many of your siblings live in Australia.
Sometimes, you just want to visit! Whether you want to explore the Great Barrier Reef or your parents want to attend your graduation ceremony in Sydney, you need a visitor visa.
Visitor Visa (Subclass 600): This visa allows for holidays, visiting family, or short business trips, usually granting stays of 3, 6, or 12 months. Crucial note: You must prove you are a genuine temporary visitor with strong financial and employment ties to your home country, as working on this visa is strictly illegal.
Choosing the wrong visa subclass or applying with incomplete documents can result in a devastating refusal, costing you thousands of dollars. You do not have to do this alone.
