Subclass 482 Skills in Demand Visa

Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Replaced: Your 2026 Guide to the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand Visa

If you have been researching Australian work visas, you have likely come across the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa. However, in a massive overhaul of the immigration system, the Australian Government has restructured this pathway. The TSS has been officially replaced by the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand (SID) Visa. Keeping the same subclass number but introducing completely new rules, the SID visa is now the primary pathway for Australian employers to sponsor overseas talent. Here is everything you need to know about the new system.

Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Replaced: Your 2026 Guide to the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand Visa

What is the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand Visa?

The Skills in Demand (SID) visa is a temporary, employer-sponsored visa that allows approved Australian businesses to hire skilled overseas workers for positions they genuinely cannot fill locally.

One of the biggest improvements with the new SID visa is worker mobility. Unlike the old TSS visa, if you wish to change employers, you now have up to 180 days to find a new sponsor, work for another employer in the meantime, or apply for a different visa.

The 3 New Visa Streams

The Department of Home Affairs has divided the SID visa into three distinct pathways based on your skill level and salary.

  • The Specialist Skills Stream: Designed for highly specialized professionals (excluding trade workers and machinery operators). To qualify, your nominated salary must meet the Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT), which is set at AUD $146,717 for the 2026 program year. Applications in this stream receive the fastest processing times.

  • The Core Skills Stream: This is the most common pathway. It covers skilled workers across trades, healthcare, IT, and hospitality whose occupations are listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). Your salary must meet the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT), currently updated to AUD $79,499.

  • The Essential Skills / Labour Agreement Stream: Tailored for workers entering through formal labour agreements negotiated between the government and specific industries facing critical shortages.

The Fast-Track Pathway to Permanent Residency (PR)

Under the old rules, temporary workers had to wait three years before applying for PR. Under the new SID framework, the pathway is much faster.

After working full-time in your nominated occupation for just two years, your employer can nominate you for Permanent Residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) TRT stream.

Eligibility Checklist for Workers

To secure the 482 SID Visa, you generally must:

  • Be nominated by an approved Standard Business Sponsor (SBS).

  • Have at least one year of relevant, full-time work experience (reduced from the previous two-year requirement).

  • Demonstrate English language proficiency (typically IELTS 5.0 overall or equivalent).

  • Pass standard health and character checks.
