Pre-Departure Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before Flying to Australia

Receiving your Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500) grant letter is an incredible milestone, but it also marks the beginning of a major life transition. Moving to a new country involves careful preparation to ensure a smooth, stress-free arrival.

Pre-Departure Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before Flying to Australia

To help you get ready, our student support teams have compiled the ultimate pre-departure guide covering banking, communication, and navigating airport customs.

1. Set Up Your Australian Banking Early

You do not have to wait until you land in Sydney or Perth to manage your finances. Australia's major banks—including Commonwealth Bank (CommBank), ANZ, Westpac, and NAB—allow international students to open a student bank account online up to three months before arrival.

  • Why do it? Opening an account early allows you to safely transfer your tuition fees and initial living expenses into a secure Australian account.

  • Activating your account: Once you land, simply visit a physical branch with your passport and university offer letter to verify your identity and collect your debit card.

2. Arrange a Local SIM Card immediately

Staying connected is critical for maps, contacting accommodation providers, and calling home.

  • At the Airport: You can purchase a prepaid SIM card at international arrival terminals from major Australian networks like Telstra, Optus, or Vodafone.

  • What you need: Keep your passport handy, as Australian law requires identity verification to activate any mobile phone number.

3. Understanding Australian Border Rules & Customs

Australia has an incredibly unique and fragile ecosystem. To protect its agriculture and environment, the country enforces some of the strictest biosecurity laws in the world.

  • The Incoming Passenger Card: On your flight, you will be handed a card to fill out. You must be completely honest. If you are carrying any food, plant material, seeds, traditional medicines, or wooden products, you MUST check "Yes" on the card.

  • What happens if you declare? A border officer will inspect the items. If they are safe, you keep them; if not, they are confiscated. There is no penalty for declaring.

  • What happens if you lie? If you fail to declare restricted items and customs officers find them in your bags, you face severe consequences, including massive on-the-spot fines, a permanent criminal record, or immediate visa cancellation and deportation.

4. Navigating Airport Pickup & Initial Accommodation

Before you board your flight, ensure your first week of housing is locked in. Whether you choose temporary student housing, a homestay, or a short-term rental, ensure you have the exact address written down. Many universities and institutions offer free or subsidized airport pickup services for new international students—make sure to book this service at least two weeks before you fly!
