Minimum PTE Scores Required
Securing an Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500) requires meeting strict criteria set by the Department of Home Affairs, and your English language proficiency is at the top of that list. The PTE Academic is highly popular among students because of its fast results and computer-based format. If you are preparing to lodge your visa application, here is a breakdown of the minimum PTE scores you need to achieve.

To apply for a standard Student Visa for higher education without taking extra English classes, the Australian Government expects a robust level of English.
The Minimum Requirement: You must score an overall PTE Academic score of 50 (which is equivalent to an IELTS 6.0).
Note: While this is the immigration minimum, highly competitive university programs (like Nursing or Social Work) may require you to score 65 or higher for admission.
If your English score is slightly below the direct-entry requirement, you don’t need to give up on your study dreams. You can package your main university degree with an ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) program.
10 Weeks of ELICOS: You will need a minimum PTE score of 42.
20 Weeks of ELICOS: You will need a minimum PTE score of 36.
It is crucial to look ahead. After you graduate, you will likely want to apply for the Subclass 485 post-study work visa. The English requirements for this visa are higher than for a standard student visa.
The Requirement: You generally need a minimum overall PTE score of 57, with no communicative skill score falling below 43. Additionally, these test results must be extremely recent—typically taken within one year before your visa application date.
Achieving these scores requires more than just good English; it requires an understanding of the test's algorithm. Our certified PTE instructors at Everest Global Education provide comprehensive training and mock tests to ensure you hit your target score on the first try.
