Individual Tax Returns in Australia: A Guide for International Students

Taxes might seem intimidating, especially in a foreign country, but understanding the Australian tax system is crucial for international students. If you are working part-time while studying, you are participating in the tax system—and you might even be owed money back! Here is a simplified guide to lodging your individual tax return in Australia.

Individual Tax Returns in Australia: A Guide for International Students

Are You a Resident for Tax Purposes?

This is the most critical concept to grasp. In Australia, your tax residency is different from your immigration status. If you are enrolled in a course that is longer than six months and you are living in Australia, you are generally considered an Australian resident for tax purposes.

  • This is a massive benefit! It means you are taxed at a lower rate than foreign residents and can access the tax-free threshold.

  • The tax-free threshold means you pay $0 in tax on the first AUD 18,200 you earn in a financial year.

The Australian Financial Year

Unlike the calendar year, the Australian financial year runs from July 1 to June 30 of the following year.

When and How to Lodge Your Tax Return

You must lodge your tax return between July 1 and October 31 every year. Even if your income is below the $18,200 threshold, you still need to formally notify the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) by lodging a return or submitting a "non-lodgment advice."

How to Lodge:

  1. Online via myGov: The easiest and fastest way is to link your ATO account to your myGov portal and lodge it yourself using the "myTax" tool.

  2. Use a Registered Tax Agent: If your finances are slightly complicated, or if you just want peace of mind, you can hire a registered tax accountant to lodge it for you.

What You Can Claim

If you spent money on items directly related to your job—such as a specific uniform, work boots, or tools—you can claim these as tax deductions to increase your refund. (Note: You generally cannot claim your university tuition fees as a deduction).
