Change Courses or Universities in Australia

How to Change Courses or Universities Legally in Australia

It is not uncommon for international students to arrive in Australia and realize that their chosen course or university isn't the right fit for their career goals. While you are allowed to change your enrollment, doing it incorrectly can lead to an immediate cancellation of your Student Visa (Subclass 500).

How to Change Courses or Universities Legally in Australia

To keep your immigration record clean, here is the legal step-by-step process for changing your course or provider under the simplified student visa framework.

The 6-Month Rule (Condition 8206)

Under your visa conditions, you must complete at least six calendar months of your principal course (the highest qualification in your package) at your original education provider before you can switch to a different institution.

If you want to transfer before completing those six months, you cannot simply sign up at a new school. You must obtain a formal Letter of Release from your current university. Universities are not obligated to give you this release unless you can demonstrate compelling compassionate or academic reasons.

Step-by-Step Process to Switch Providers Legally

Step 1: Secure a New Offer Letter Before notifying your current university, apply to your new chosen institution and secure a conditional or unconditional Offer Letter.

Step 2: Apply for a Letter of Release (If within the first 6 months) Submit a formal transfer request to your current university along with your new offer letter. If they approve it, they will issue a digital Letter of Release. (Note: If you have already completed more than six months of your principal course, you can bypass this step entirely).

Step 3: Accept the New Offer and Pay Fees Once released, accept your new offer, pay the first semester's tuition deposit, and obtain your new electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE).

Step 4: Cancel Your Old Enrollment Formally notify your old institution so they can cancel your previous eCoE.

Do You Need to Notify the Department of Home Affairs?

This depends entirely on the AQF (Australian Qualifications Framework) level of your new course:

  • Same or Higher Level: If you are moving from a Bachelor’s degree to another Bachelor’s degree, your visa remains valid. The Department will automatically see your new eCoE in their system. You do not need to apply for a new visa.

  • Lower Level: If you are downgrading your qualification (e.g., dropping from a Master’s degree to a Vocational Advanced Diploma), you must apply for a brand-new Student Visa. Failing to do so puts you in direct breach of Visa Condition 8202 (maintaining an eligible enrollment level), which can lead to immediate visa cancellation.

Avoid the "Visa Trap"

Be extremely cautious of unscrupulous agencies promising cheap, unaccredited courses just to save you money upfront. Dropping out of an elite university to join a low-tier college purely to work full-time will trigger intense scrutiny under the Genuine Student (GS) assessment and heavily jeopardize your chances of securing a Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) or PR later.
