Commonly Asked Questions in an Australian Student Visa Interview
While many Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500) applications are processed based solely on the documents you provide, the Department of Home Affairs occasionally requests a phone or face-to-face interview. If you are called for an interview, there is no need to panic—it is simply the case officer's way of verifying that you meet the Genuine Student (GS) requirement. To help you prepare, our visa experts at Everest Global Education have compiled the most commonly asked interview questions and tips on how to answer them confidently.

1. "Why do you want to study in Australia instead of your home country?"
How to Answer: Never say it is because you want to live in Australia permanently. Focus on the quality of education. Explain that the specific course curriculum is more advanced, practical, or globally recognized than what is available in your home country.
2. "Why did you choose this specific university or college?"
How to Answer: You need to show that you did your research. Mention the university’s ranking, specific faculty members, campus facilities, or industry connections. Compare it to one or two other Australian universities to prove you made an informed choice.
3. "Why are you applying for this specific course?"
How to Answer: Connect the course directly to your career goals. If you are studying a Master of IT, explain how the modules in that specific degree will help you secure a Senior Developer role when you enter the workforce.
4. "Who is sponsoring your education, and what is their annual income?"
How to Answer: State clearly who your sponsor is (e.g., your parents or spouse) and provide their exact occupation and annual income. The officer wants to ensure you know where the money is coming from and that the source is legitimate.
5. "How much will your tuition and living expenses cost?"
How to Answer: Memorize the exact tuition fees listed on your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) and know the current Australian minimum living cost requirement (approximately AUD 29,710).
6. "What are your career plans after completing your degree?"
How to Answer: Be specific. Do not just say, "I want to get a good job." Name specific companies you would like to work for in your home country, or explain how the degree will help you start your own business. Mention the expected starting salary to prove the degree is a good financial investment.
7. "Do you have any relatives living in Australia?"
How to Answer: Be 100% honest. If you have a sibling or an aunt in Australia, tell them. If you lie and the Department finds out (which they easily can), your visa will be refused for fraud.
8. "Where is your university located, and what do you know about the city?"
How to Answer: Know the city and state. If you are studying in Perth, mention Western Australia. If you are studying in Sydney, mention New South Wales. Knowing a bit about the local climate or public transport system shows you are genuinely prepared.
9. "Do you plan to work while studying?"
How to Answer: Acknowledge that you are aware of the strict 48-hour per fortnight work limitation. State that your primary focus is your studies, but you may take up part-time work to gain local experience and manage your pocket money.
10. "What will you do if your visa gets rejected?"
How to Answer: Stay calm. State that you believe you have provided all the necessary evidence to prove you are a genuine student, but if rejected, you will focus on building your career or pursuing further education in your home country.
