Buckinghamshire New University sponsor licence suspension explained: what it means for current BNU students, Nepali offer holders and families, and what to do next.

If you hold an offer from Buckinghamshire New University (BNU), are already studying there, or have a son or daughter in High Wycombe, the news from 30 September 2026 may have worried you. The Buckinghamshire New University sponsor licence suspension means the university can't currently sponsor new international students on the UK Student visa route.
We know how much Nepali families invest in a UK study plan. This guide sets out what the UK Home Office has confirmed, what it means for you, and practical steps to take this week. We have used official GOV.UK guidance and reputable news reports, and we flag anything that isn't yet known.
According to the GOV.UK announcement from the Home Office:
On 30 September 2026, the Home Office suspended Buckinghamshire New University's Student sponsor licence.
The suspension took effect immediately, and the university was removed from the Register of licensed sponsors: students.
The university has 20 working days to respond. If it doesn't show that its licence should be reinstated, the licence will be revoked.
Students currently sponsored by the university can continue their studies while the suspension is in place, as long as their permission to stay remains valid.
The suspension doesn't affect domestic students or students on other types of immigration permission that don't rely on sponsorship.
BNU's Worker and Temporary Worker licences are not affected.
The GOV.UK summary says the suspension "follows concerns about the university's compliance with its sponsor duties." The Home Office has not published the detailed reasons. BBC News reported that BNU said "many of the issues raised by the Home Office relate to historic international student recruitment activity," and that it has strengthened governance and compliance since a new vice-chancellor and executive team were appointed in 2025. Times Higher Education reported the university saying its priority is "to reassure current international students that they can continue and complete their studies as normal."
We checked the student sponsor register published on 5 October 2026. Buckinghamshire New University no longer appears on it.
GOV.UK doesn't give an exact date. If you count 20 working days from 30 September 2026 (there are no UK bank holidays in October), the response window ends around Wednesday 28 October 2026. Please treat that as an estimate. Under the Home Office's Student sponsor guidance, extensions can be granted in exceptional circumstances, and a final decision can take longer while representations are considered. So the outcome may not be known on that exact day.
Buckinghamshire New University (BNU, also called Bucks New University) is a different institution from The University of Buckingham, which was still on the student sponsor register as of 5 October 2026. If you're unsure which university issued your offer, check the full legal name on your offer letter.
If you're already in the UK on a Student visa sponsored by BNU, here is the most important point: you can keep studying while the suspension is in place, as long as your visa (permission to stay) is still valid. GOV.UK's page on what happens if your education provider loses its sponsor licence or has it suspended says the same: "If you're already in the UK, you can continue to study with your current education provider."
Keep attending classes, submitting coursework and meeting your attendance requirements.
Check your university email and student portal for official updates.
Keep your passport, eVisa details, CAS and enrolment documents organised in one place.
Extensions: if you apply to extend your stay using a CAS that BNU assigned before it was removed from the register, the Home Office guidance says it will decide case by case, and some applications may be held until a decision on the licence is made.
New CAS: a suspended sponsor may not be able to issue new CAS numbers.
Nobody knows the outcome yet, but it helps to understand the process. If the licence is revoked, the Home Office guidance describes these possibilities:
Teach-out: UKVI may allow some or all students to keep studying with the university for a limited time, up to six months or the end of the current academic year, whichever is longer.
60-day curtailment: if continued study isn't allowed, your visa may be shortened to 60 calendar days (or the time you have left, if that's shorter). During that time you can find a new licensed sponsor, get a new CAS and apply for a new visa. You would need to pay the visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge again.
Immediate cancellation: this applies only to students who were not genuine students or who were involved in the reasons the licence was lost.
This group is most directly affected, especially Nepali students preparing for January or later intakes.
Waiting for a CAS? GOV.UK says a suspended sponsor "may no longer be able to issue" CAS numbers. Contact BNU's international admissions team and ask in writing where you stand.
Already applied for your visa? Your application may be put on hold while the licence is suspended, or refused if you're not eligible. If it's on hold, you can either wait for the outcome or withdraw your visa application.
Already have your visa but haven't travelled? The Home Office guidance says students who travel in this situation do so at their own risk. If the licence is later revoked, visas held by students who haven't travelled may be cancelled, and anyone who then travels will be refused entry. GOV.UK also says visa fees and the healthcare surcharge will not be refunded in that case.
Read the official sources yourself. Bookmark the GOV.UK BNU announcement and the Register of licensed sponsors: students.
Contact BNU in writing. Ask about your CAS, your visa position and the refund terms for any tuition deposit, and keep copies of every reply.
Hold off on new payments. Think carefully before paying more tuition, accommodation or other non-refundable costs until the position is clear.
Gather your documents. Keep your offer letter, CAS, payment receipts, visa application reference and bank records together.
Prepare a backup plan. Look at other licensed UK universities, or a different destination such as Australia, so you don't lose a full intake.
Get regulated advice. For your individual UK immigration situation, speak to a regulated immigration adviser or contact UKVI.
Ignore rumours. Social media posts and unofficial agents may spread wrong information. Trust GOV.UK and the university's official channels.
This case is a useful reminder for every Nepali student considering the UK:
Search the register before paying any fees. The Register of licensed sponsors: students is free, public and updated regularly. Search for the exact legal name of the institution.
Check again before each big payment. A licence that is valid when you accept an offer can be suspended later, so recheck before you pay deposits, accept a CAS or book flights.
Read refund policies carefully. Before you pay, find out what happens to your deposit if your visa is refused or the sponsor loses its licence.
Use honest, transparent counselling. A good consultancy should show you where the official information comes from, not just ask you to trust it.
Some students will wait for the outcome; others will want a backup plan. Everest Global Edu has offices in Nepal and Australia, and we help students compare UK and Australian options side by side, looking at course fit, costs, intakes and visa requirements.

Yes. The Home Office says students currently sponsored by BNU can continue their studies while the suspension is in place, as long as their permission to stay remains valid.
GOV.UK says a suspended sponsor may no longer be able to issue CAS numbers. Contact BNU's admissions team directly for confirmation about your case.
It may be put on hold while the licence is suspended, or refused if you're not eligible. If it's on hold, you can wait for the outcome or withdraw the application.
The Home Office may allow a limited teach-out period, or shorten students' visas to 60 days so they can find a new sponsor and apply for a new visa. Students who were not genuine or were involved in the reasons for revocation may have their visas cancelled immediately.
The university has 20 working days to respond. By our count that's around 28 October 2026, but GOV.UK has not published an exact date, and the decision may take longer.
Search the Register of licensed sponsors: students on GOV.UK using the institution's exact name, and check again before every major payment.
