7 Proven Strategies to Score 79+ in Your PTE Academic Exam

Scoring a 79 or above on the PTE Academic (equivalent to an IELTS 8.0) is the ultimate goal for many international students and skilled workers in Australia. Why? Because achieving this "Superior English" level rewards you with the maximum 20 points toward your Permanent Residency (PR) application. Scoring 79+ is challenging, but with the right strategy, it is entirely possible. Here are 7 proven tips to beat the algorithm.

7 Proven Strategies to Score 79+ in Your PTE Academic Exam

1. Understand the Integrated Scoring System

Unlike IELTS, the PTE uses an integrated scoring system. This means tasks in one section affect your score in another. For example, "Read Aloud" tests both your Speaking and Reading skills. "Write from Dictation" affects both Listening and Writing. Focus heavily on these high-weightage, cross-scoring tasks.

2. Master "Write from Dictation" (WFD)

This is arguably the most important task in the entire test. You will hear a sentence and must type it exactly as spoken. Every correct word gives you a point for both Listening and Writing. Practice WFD daily—getting this right can easily bump your score across two bands.

3. Speak Naturally, Don't Fake an Accent

The AI does not care if you have an American, British, or Nepali accent. It cares about Oral Fluency and Pronunciation. Speak at a natural, consistent pace. Do not pause to correct yourself, and do not shout into the microphone. Smooth, continuous speech is the key to maxing out the Speaking section.

4. Utilize Templates Carefully

Templates are incredibly useful for the "Describe Image," "Retell Lecture," and "Write Essay" tasks. They save you time and keep your grammar structured. However, the AI has become smarter. Ensure your templates include high-quality, relevant keywords from the prompt, rather than just filling blanks with generic transition words.

5. Time Management in the Reading Section

The Reading section is where most students panic because it is strictly timed as a whole, rather than per question. Do not spend more than 2 minutes on a single Multiple-Choice Question. Save your time for the "Fill in the Blanks" tasks, which carry much heavier weight.

6. Check Your Plurals and Tenses

In tasks like "Summarize Spoken Text," missing an 's' on a plural word or using the wrong tense will trigger a penalty from the AI. Always leave one minute to proofread your typed answers.

7. Take Official Mock Tests

The only way to know if you are ready is to practice in a realistic environment. Pearson’s official scored mock tests are the best indicator of your actual test-day performance.

At Everest Global Education, we provide intensive PTE coaching that breaks down the algorithm, provides high-scoring templates, and includes full-length mock tests.
