Visa-Hopping
In a major shake-up to immigration policies, the Australian Government has implemented strict rules to end "visa hopping." This practice—where individuals continually apply for temporary visas onshore to prolong their stay—is no longer a viable strategy in 2026.

Visa hopping typically refers to the practice of jumping from one temporary visa to another while already inside Australia. For example, individuals on a standard Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) applying for a Student Visa (Subclass 500) onshore, or students jumping from course to course purely to extend their stay without genuine career progression.
To restore integrity to the international education sector, the Department of Home Affairs has established firm boundaries:
Visitor to Student Visa Restrictions: You can no longer apply for a Student Visa while holding a standard Visitor Visa onshore. You must return to your home country and lodge an offshore application.
Temporary Graduate (Subclass 485) Restrictions: Holders of a 485 visa can no longer apply for a standard Student Visa onshore to delay their departure. The 485 visa is meant to be a transition to skilled migration or a return home.
The Genuine Student (GS) Test: For those who are eligible to extend their student visas onshore (such as progressing from a Bachelor's to a Master's degree), the scrutiny under the new GS requirement is higher than ever. Your academic progression must make logical, career-driven sense.
These changes mean that strategic, long-term planning is more critical than ever. You can no longer rely on last-minute visa switches to stay in the country.
