2026-Focus
Australia remains one of the world’s top destinations for international students, offering world-class education, a vibrant multicultural lifestyle, and excellent post-study career opportunities. However, navigating the visa landscape can sometimes feel overwhelming. As we move through 2026, the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs has rolled out several crucial updates to the Student Visa (Subclass 500) framework. Whether you are applying from our local office in Pokhara, Nepal, or looking for guidance from our headquarters in Perth, Everest Global Education is here to break down exactly what these changes mean for your study abroad dream.

The most significant change in 2026 is the complete transition from the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement to the Genuine Student (GS) requirement.
Instead of trying to prove that you only intend to stay in Australia temporarily, the focus is now entirely on proving that you are a genuine student whose primary goal is to gain a quality education to advance your career.
What this means for you: You will need to provide clear, evidence-based answers regarding your academic background, how your chosen course logically progresses your career, and your future plans after graduation.
Visa Hopping: This new rule also heavily restricts "visa hopping" (e.g., trying to switch from a standard Visitor Visa to a Student Visa onshore).
To ensure students can comfortably keep up with their coursework and safely integrate into the Australian workforce, the English language minimums have been increased:
Student Visa (Subclass 500): The minimum score is now IELTS 6.0 (or a PTE equivalent of 50), up from 5.5.
ELICOS Packages: If you are packaging an English course with your main university degree, you need a minimum score of IELTS 5.0.
Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485): Planning for post-study work? The requirement is now IELTS 6.5, and your test results must have been achieved within one year of your application.
(Need help hitting these scores? Everest Global Education provides comprehensive IELTS and PTE preparation classes with mock tests and 1-on-1 coaching!)
Because the cost of living globally has risen, Australia has updated its financial requirements to ensure you can comfortably support yourself during your studies. To secure your visa in 2026, you must show access to adequate savings. The minimum financial capacity requirement for living costs is now tied to 75% of the national minimum wage:
Primary Applicant: AUD 29,710 per year.
Spouse/Partner: An additional AUD 10,394.
First Child: An additional AUD 4,449.
You must prove these funds through verifiable bank statements, official education loans, or scholarship letters.
In early 2026, the Department of Home Affairs updated the "Country Evidence Levels" under the Simplified Student Visa Framework. Countries like Nepal, India, and Bangladesh are currently classified under Level 3, which indicates a higher level of scrutiny.
Don't panic! This does not mean your visa will be refused. It simply means you must provide full, airtight documentation from the get-go. Our experienced migration agents at Everest Global Education will meticulously review your financial and academic evidence to ensure it aligns perfectly with the DHA’s Document Checklist Tool.
The good news is that Australia still offers generous work rights to help you manage living expenses and gain industry experience.

During Semester Breaks: You have unlimited work rights.
Master’s by Research & PhD: You retain unlimited work rights year-round.
